A Sparrow Tale

“Too long a sacrifice can make a stone of the heart – W. B. Yeats

We all have known times of giving too much, whether to work, family or charity. One fine spring when I was working way too hard, I spied a young sparrow that had strayed from the watchful eye of its mother. Discounting the old tale about not touching the chick, my instincts sought to save her from being devoured by the neighborhood cat. Swiftly I carried the creature close to the nest; certain the mother bird would find her. For two days, I would race home from work, only to see the sweet babe struggle for breath, until she became lifeless.

This sad tale served to show me how my own life was slowly being sucked away by doing too much and resting too little. Perhaps I was waiting for someone to notice, carry me to a safe place and comfort my aching for acknowledgement. Life was telling me, this was not to be, I had to take note of my own needs and be my own savior.

Take time to make a cup of herbal tea and drink the brew mindfully. Then ask the following question:

How can you tend to your own needs today?

Savor the moment…

Debra Mae
