Liquid Power

by Debra Mae White on July 18, 2013

Niagra FallsEmerald was the color of the waters cascading across the falls, pure liquid power pouring from mother earth. We spoke of the majesty of the thunderous blows that fell from above to christen the river running below. Yet I found myself searching to connect with a far more elusive force that seemed to slip my grasp each time I got close.

Our family gathered in honor of my parent’s 60th anniversary in Niagra Falls, Canada. The location selected to commemorate a second honeymoon brought me to the scene of a vacation taken in my teens. Wisps of memory and meaning floated by me like a parade of experiences longing to tether themselves to something real, something true. Somehow I saw myself grow large enough to encompass the entire universe. My life expanded into the rushing waters across the wide mouth of the falls as I watched, then contracted into a still, solid point. That point was my being, me standing precariously on the pin of one moment in time.

Nature brings forth massive and monumental feats. Yet everyone who lives this life is no less a masterpiece. Memories are like paintings hanging on the walls of the soul. A shift in perspective brings us home to that which will outlive all such glories. As I stood at the crest of those wild waters, I saw life through the eyes of the creator and embraced in wonder all that I have been or ever will be.

Who among us can deny that magnificence?

Savor the moment…

Debra Mae
