All I want for Christmas is Rest

by Debra Mae White on December 16, 2011

Do you find the holidays often set a frenetic pace? When pondering how to savor the season amidst the acceleration of activity, I came upon the following quote in “A Grateful Heart,” by M.J. Ryan:

Even if heaven and earth turn upside down, it does not mean that they are not at rest, and even if floods overflow heaven, it does not mean that they are in motion.” – Seng-Chao, “Treatises”

When you live in the present moment, you do not exhaust yourself. Energy depletion is the result of being detached from the activity at hand. Allowing your focus to drift to the future, while acting in the present, will make you bone tired. If you are truly present to the moment, by the very nature of experience, you will not be distracted. Only the moment will hold your attention.

“Going through” the motions, with the mind on the next item on the “to do” list, instead of “being in” the motion, robs the rich reward from the experience. In deliberate motion, when your actions come from the heart, you embody the still, small center that remains resting at peace. Even as you work, shop and celebrate, you are replenished from this stillness. Embracing life in this way energizes.

The act of giving yourself over to the moment is the greatest gift you can give yourself.  This year, I want to feel the joy, the bliss, and the spirit of rest at Christmas.

Will you join me in that blessed space?

Savor the moment…

Debra Mae

Thanks for your comment Susan. It’s all part of living my lesson and has not been without challenge during this Christmas season.

What a wonderful reminder at the perfect time. Christmas is definitely a time to live in the present and savor each moment. Even shopping can be fun and inspiring when in the right frame of mind. I’ve meet some very nice people and heard some interesting stories while waiting in line in department stores, people and stories I never would have meet–or heard–if I hadn’t been in that spot at that moment, standing still.
